NUH Consultants and Greater Nottingham GP Leads meeting: "Getting to know you!"

NUH Consultants and Greater Nottingham GP Leads meeting:

Ourselves and leaders from both Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust and Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust met late in 2018 to discuss the primary/secondary care interface. It was apparent that there was some tension expressed in the working relationships and expectations between those working in both settings and a determination that this should be improved.

On Thursday 28th February 2019 GPs, Consultant Colleagues and Executive Team members from primary and secondary care met at Nottingham City Hospital. The aim of the meeting was to discuss how communication and interaction could be increased to enable colleagues to work more collaboratively.

It was evident at the meeting that all colleagues around the table had the same goal; to achieve quality patient-centred care. However, it was also recognised that to be able to do this easily, colleagues needed to be better acquainted and be given the opportunity to understand the challenges and pressures that the other faces.

The meeting was hugely positive and productive, with a GP/Consultant Leadership Group being formed as a result.

Over the following months, the group hopes through its work to:

• Identify and share opportunities for increased interaction between GP and Consultant colleagues. This will cover informal, formal, meetings and training/education events.
• Improve the process for identifying, sharing, acting on and feedback of ideas and concerns.
• Improve primary/secondary care communication to enable changes in practice through improved understanding.

The first of the two focused topic nights is to be held in the summer and will be a GP/Consultant networking event. This will provide colleagues with an opportunity to meet each other, better understand the GP/Hospital contract and discuss case studies, pathways and work requests in more detail.

When are the next events scheduled for?

Monday 8 July in the evening (venue and details to be confirmed) and Thursday 12 September in the evening. Please keep these evenings free in your diaries.
